You must check out a fascinating NYTimes article on the simultaneous spawning of the little critters who make up coral reefs. It only happens once a year at a given reef and then only with a full romantic moon. Understanding the necessary conditions for the group spawn has the potential to prevent the kind of pollution which inhibits some reefs from spawning and growing. With even the Great Barrier Reef threatened with bleaching, and the wonderful ecosystem for marine animals provided by coral reefs, this research is critical. Be sure to check out the video. It’s like shaking those glass globes with fake snow.
